An amino acid found in tea leaves. Pooled across placebo-controlled trials it shows gains in cognitive performance, with the relaxed alertness that makes it worth pairing with caffeine rather than taking alone. The reviewers call the picture promising rather than settled, and so do we.
The combination is better evidenced than either compound by itself. A review pooling fifty randomised trials found theanine with caffeine gives small to moderate improvements in attention task performance against placebo, with the edge of caffeine taken off the top.
Electrolytes change how long fluid stays in you. When drinks are ranked by how much fluid is retained rather than consumed, those carrying sodium and potassium hold an advantage over plain water hours after the last sip.
Magnesium bound to glycine absorbs well and sits gently in the gut, unlike the oxide form that dominates cheap supplements. A placebo-controlled trial in adults sleeping poorly, and a meta-analysis of trials in older adults with insomnia, both measured improvements in how fast people fell asleep and how rested they felt.
Glycine before bed has been trialled for subjective sleep quality and next-day fatigue, and a 2024 review pulled the human evidence together. The mechanism work is the interesting part: glycine acts on NMDA receptors in the suprachiasmatic nucleus and lowers core body temperature, which is the same drop the body uses to initiate sleep. No hormone involved. The trials used 3g; we dose 2g on top of the glycine already bonded to the magnesium.
The category norm is sugar, a proprietary blend and a caffeine figure nobody wants to print. We took a different position on all three.
The functional drinks aisle still runs on sugar. Pooled cohort and trial evidence ties sugar-sweetened beverages to weight gain, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular risk, and the dose does not need to be large to count. We took the whole variable off the table rather than trimming it.
